Regardless of the ruling by Brazil’s Supreme Court which legalizes civil unions between same-sex couples, their homophobia is as rampant as ever. Perhaps worse.
Political leaders in Sao Paulo are pushing for a bill declaring “Heterosexual Pride Day” which, to my thinking, is not inherently wrong – but this legislation is a front to hide the real agenda: abolishing the hard-won and very few rights of gay people in Brazil.
Once you start eliminating a minority’s rights, it’s a short hop to the idea of eliminating that minority altogether. Genocide anyone?
Carlos Apolinario is the representative behind the bill. He has decided that the gay community “has enjoyed excessive privileges for too long”. Incredible.
To give you a sense of the problems for LGBT people in Brazil, conservative congressmen are declaring their pride to be PREJUDICED against gays. Let this sink in: the percentage of people KILLED solely for their sexual orientation has risen 113% in the last five years.
If such blatant bias is allowed to flourish, the few rights of LGBT Brazilians will fast erode in an immoral country.
